- partial_coverage — Area-weighted average across the 6135 English ward records Forest Research's dataset actually has -- this covers 89.4% of England's current wards by count but only 54.6% of its real area, since the missing wards are disproportionately large/rural (see ADR-0009); this figure likely skews toward more urban canopy rates than true full-England coverage would show. Also blends multiple real survey years (2018-2023) into one figure, labelled with the modal year (2020).

What this means
Draft wording: awaiting review by the parish council.
Tree canopy cover is the share of the land that is shaded by the leaves and branches of trees when you look down from above.
Trees take in carbon dioxide, cool hot streets, soak up heavy rain and give homes to birds, insects and other wildlife. A higher share is better.
This figure comes from a survey of the whole local ward, so it is an estimate for the parish, not a count of trees. Where the survey only covers one year, the dashboard cannot yet show whether cover is going up or down.
Opportunities
- Free trees for communities (Woodland Trust)
The Woodland Trust gives community groups free trees and advice on planting them. A parish group could apply for a pack.
Link last checked 2026-10-03
- Join the local environment champions (Cholsey Environment Champions (Low Carbon Hub))
Cholsey Environment Champions are a local climate and nature group with a wildlife activity area. Ask them how to help with local planting.
Link last checked 2026-10-03
- Grants to plant woodland on farm or estate land (Forestry Commission (GOV.UK))
If you own or manage land, the England Woodland Creation Offer pays towards planting new woodland.
